Frequently asked questions

How are letters and words separated in Morse?

Letters are separated by a space and words by a slash (/). In audio, a dash lasts three dots, there is a three-dot silence between letters and seven between words.

What does WPM mean?

Words per minute, the standard Morse speed measure, based on the reference word “PARIS”. Learners usually start at 5–12 WPM; skilled operators go beyond 25.

Are accented letters supported?

Yes. Letters such as Ñ, Ç, É, È, Ä, Ö and Ü have their own codes. Accented vowels without a code (á, í, ó, ú) are sent as the plain vowel, which is common practice.

How do you write SOS in Morse?

SOS is ... --- ... (three dots, three dashes, three dots). In practice it is sent as one continuous signal, with no gaps between letters, as the international distress call.
