Frequently asked questions
How is BMI calculated?
Weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. For example, 70 kg and 1.75 m give 70 / (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9. In imperial units: 703 × lb / in².
What BMI values are normal?
According to the WHO, for adults: under 18.5 is underweight; 18.5 to 24.9 is normal; 25 to 29.9 is overweight; 30 or more is obesity (class I up to 34.9, class II up to 39.9 and class III from 40).
Does BMI apply to everyone?
No. It does not tell muscle from fat, so it overestimates in muscular athletes and may underestimate in older people. It is not applied the same way to children, teenagers or pregnant women.
What is BMI Prime?
Your BMI divided by 25 (the upper limit of normal weight). A value of 1.0 is right at that limit; above it indicates overweight.
