Frequently asked questions
Which barcode format should I use?
EAN-13 (or UPC-A in the US and Canada) is the standard for retail products; ITF-14 is used on shipping cartons; Code 128 is the most versatile for internal use because it supports letters, numbers and symbols.
What is the check digit?
It is the last digit of EAN, UPC and ITF-14 codes, calculated from the others with the GS1 (modulo 10) algorithm. It lets scanners detect read errors. Here it is calculated and validated automatically.
Can I use these EAN codes to sell in stores?
To sell through major retailers or marketplaces you need numbers assigned to your company by GS1. This tool generates the barcode image but does not assign official numbers.
PNG or SVG?
SVG is vector and keeps its quality at any print size, ideal for printers and labels. The PNG is rendered at triple resolution so it looks sharp on screen and in documents.
