Passphrase generator

A passphrase combines several randomly chosen words, like “Harbor-Tiger-Rain-Map-Cheese42”. It can be as secure as a long password and is far easier to remember and type. Words are picked with your browser’s cryptographic generator.

Frequently asked questions

Is a passphrase more secure than a password?

It depends on entropy, not appearance. Six random words from our list give about 50 bits and eight about 65; a 16-character random password exceeds 100. The passphrase’s advantage is that you can memorize it.

Why are there no accents in the words?

So you can type the passphrase on any keyboard — including foreign layouts, phones or TVs — without encoding issues.

How many words should I use?

At least 6 for normal accounts and 8 or more for master passwords or encryption. Each extra word multiplies the number of combinations by more than 250.

Are passphrases generated securely?

Yes. Every word is chosen with crypto.getRandomValues and unbiased sampling, in your browser. Nothing is sent or stored.
