Frequently asked questions

What are UTM parameters?

They are tags added to the end of a URL, such as ?utm_source=newsletter. They do not change the page, but Google Analytics reads them to know where each visit came from.

Which ones are required?

Source, medium and campaign are the three basics. Term, content and ID are optional and help tell variants apart within one campaign.

Why should I use lowercase?

Analytics treats “Email” and “email” as different sources. Always writing them in lowercase avoids fragmented reports.

Can I use UTMs on internal links?

It is not recommended: they restart the session and distort traffic sources. Use them only on links that point to your site from elsewhere.
