Convert HTML to Markdown

Paste HTML code — or copy a formatted article from a web page and paste it directly — and get clean, readable Markdown with headings, lists, links, images, tables and code blocks. You can pick the heading style, bullets and link style. The conversion runs in your browser.

Tip: copy a page or article and paste it in the box; the formatting (bold, lists, tables) becomes Markdown.

Use cases

  • Turn a blog or web article into Markdown to keep in your notes.

  • Convert the HTML of an email or text into a lighter, editable format.
  • Prepare a README or a wiki entry from an existing page.

Frequently asked questions

Is my HTML sent to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser with Turndown.

Are tables preserved?

Yes, with the GFM option on, which adds support for tables, strikethrough and task lists. If you turn it off, tables become plain text.

What does it do with CSS and scripts?

Scripts, styles and iframes are discarded: they are not content. Only what would show as text, lists, tables, images and code is converted.

Can I copy straight from a web page?

Yes. When you paste formatted text, the tool uses its HTML (you can switch that off in the options) and converts it to Markdown.

What is “GFM” Markdown?

GitHub Flavored Markdown: a widespread variant that adds tables, strikethrough and task lists to basic Markdown.
